Magical Nature: Cloves

Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) are the dried flower buds of the Syzygium aromaticum tree.  They are a  commonly used spice all over the world and have a very distinctive taste and aroma.

Because Cloves contain high amounts of eugenol, a compound with both anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties, Cloves can help your body deal with infections and inflammation. Cloves also contain kaempferol and rhamnetin, flavonoids that share the same properties as eugenol.

Clove bud oil is commonly used to treat tooth and gum pain, sore muscles and joint pain. It can also be applied to minor scrapes and cuts.  When using it topically it is best to mix with a carrier oil like coconut or olive oil.  Clove oil can sting or cause an allergic reaction.  Use sparingly until you know how you will react.

Clove tea has been used to lessen cold and coughs and congestion. It can also help alleviate vomiting, diarrhea, intestinal gas and stomach aches.
